New archaeological site in the Call of Girona

15th century Mikveh Viewer

The Bonastruc ça Porta Centre is built on several different properties which were part of the Jewish quarter of Girona. In 1435, the Jewish community built here the last medieval synagogue, used until 1492.

An important element has been identified in 2014: the "women's" baths, or mikveh. Even though in later rebuildings it was transformed into a cistern, the original structure has been preserved.

This 2015 new excavations carried out by the Archaeology Laboratory of the University of Girona, have allowed to locate some ancient deposits of water collection dated back possibly to Roman times, as well as the gateway to the ritual baths and part of the original floor (late 15th ct.)

Once documented, the area has been architecturally adapted to make it accessible to the public. It is now certainly one of the most evocative places in the old Jewish quarter and the perfect end for a visit to the Museum of Jewish History.
