The Jewish New Year: Cosmos and Microcosmos reflected by the Calendar

The calendar is a metaphor used to explain the relationship between humanity and the cosmos by which it is surrounded and defined. In Jewish thinking, time symbolises perpetual renovation. The calendar is an important element in Judaism, since the passage of time is defined according to history and tradition. While the week is oriented towards the Shabbat, the year follows the rhythm of the celebrations, which are the memory of the Jewish existence, both from a religious and a historic point of view.
