Simone Weil, un contraban difícil

Lecture by Adrià Chavarria

Tuesday, January 23,
Institut d'Estudis Nahmànides

The conference cycle "Jewish authors of the 20th century" aims to present different literary personalities of the twentieth century, which in some way (by birth, formation, culture, affiliation, or negation) have had a relationship with Judaism. We want to present them from one of their works, or from his set of texts, books, writings, and from the perspective of analysis of "Judaism" or Jewish culture and all that implies.

Simone Weil was a French philosopher, humanist, writer, and political activist. With a complex personality, she was considered the only philosopher to have clearly lived the "working class condition". From non-religious Jewish parents, she adhered to anarcho-syndicalism and converted to Christianity.

Adrià Chavarria, Barcelona, is a literary critic and essayist. Graduated in History in Tarragona and in Philosophy in Barcelona, he has completed doctoral studies within the Philosophy and Gender Seminar of the University of Barcelona. The main focuses of interest and on which he focuses his studies are, on one hand, poet and philosopher women and, on the other hand, Judaism and Jewish culture. Thus, under the direction of Fina Birulés, he wrote his dissertation on Simone Weil, of whom he is a specialist.
