'Jewish art, a human science'

Open Day Doors organized within the 'Art International Day'

Saturday, April 14,
Museu d'Història dels Jueus

In 2011, UNESCO declared April 15 The International Art Day, on the occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci, on April 15, 1452.
The celebration of this Day in Girona is an initiative promoted and coordinated by Bòlit - Contemporary Art Center, which includes a lot of activities for all audiences that aim to bring art to the whole citizenship.

The Museum of Jewish History joins another year this celebration, this time with the proposal "Jewish art, a human science". On the second floor of the museum, the permanent collection focuses on the professional activity of the Jews in Girona; In the area of medicine, the weekend visitors are invited to see the image of the Zodiac Man, an illustration for medical purposes found in a 14th-century Hebrew manuscript (National Library of Paris, Ms. Heb. 1181, page 264v) and reproduced in human scale in the Museum of Jewish History, in order to put it in relation with the famous Vitruvian Man of Leonardo (1490). Their similarities and, above all, the differences between one image and the other allow us to reflect on the ideological and intellectual change that placed the human being as the center of knowledge and science.
