The government of the city was also organised during the medieval period. Under the control of the royal administration, the municipal authorities administered justice, guaranteed public order, managed finances, controlled the markets and the quality of products, supervised sanitation and social assistance, and so on. Another significant development during this period was the establishment, in the 12th century, of an important Jewish community in the old town, which grew to gain great prestige in the 13th centur
