As a royal and episcopal city, Girona was a centre of great importance in medieval Catalonia. The royalty promoted important building works, above all a massive enlargement of the walls, while the Church fostered a large part of the city’s intellectual and artistic activity. A significant repertory of this mediaeval past still remains today, with important creations from the Romanesque period such as the Tapestry of the Creation or Gothic masterpieces like the Church of Saint Felix, the façade of the Almshouse or the nave of the Cathedral.
