The Napoleonic War  [room 9]

1808 – 1814

Detail of display case in the Napoleonic War Room showing weapons, camp-bed, flags and apparel worn by the Santa Barbara heroines and the soldiers who defended the city of Girona (1808- 1809).

During the long resistance of 18 months against the Napoleonic army, the people of Girona experienced one of the most tragic periods of their history. The city lost half of its population and suffered the grave consequences of this economic and social turmoil until well into the 19th century. Seen as a dramatic time for some, heroic by others, this has become the most emblematic and hotly-debated episode of the city’s history.
