Travel maps. The Catalan Atlas and the Cresques, Jews of Mallorca (14th century)

Guided visit to the Cresques Atlas

Thursday, September 24,
Museu d'Història dels Jueus

If the central theme of this year's edition of the European Day of Jewish Culture is travel, from the Museum we propose a journey through the cartography of antiquity through the Catalan Atlas of Cresques (1375). A very complete nautical chart of the Mediterranean that will help us understand the vision of the known world in the 14th century. A rich iconography that speaks, among other things, of astrology, cosmogony, calendar, flora and fauna, geography, economic and religious policy, but also of myths and legends. A work that draws from the sources of knowledge of the 14th century and that gives rise to a true tradition of Catalan cartography located in Mallorca and that reaches a great diffusion and persistence until the 17th century.

We propose the experience of entering the world of Mallorcan portulan cartographers Cresques Abraham and his son Jafudà Cresques.

Free activity in Catalan.
