The Jews of Catalonia and the Jewish quarter

Patronat Call de Girona itinerant exhibition

from July 1st, 2000 to March 31st, 2003
Museu d'Història dels Jueus

In today's Catalonia, some cities still preserve the urban space occupied by the Jewish quarter. The Call of Barcelona, located in the current Gothic quarter, had once been the Jewish quarter or Girona, where its narrow and wet stone streets allow us to enter its Jewish past. Cities and towns that have kept the trace of that ancient culture over the centuries. They have preserved and spread its heritage so that we can get an idea of what the life of the past millennium was like.

This exhibition reviews the history of Catalan Jews: when they arrived, where they settled down, how they lived, who and why they persecuted them, how they survived the attacks, where and how they prayed, how they organized themselves, which figures led them. We will follow the footsteps of the Jewish community and discover its history, its culture and how it was its daily life.
