The general’s death precipitated the process of dissolution of the Francoist regime and a difficulty-beset start on building the democratic state. The June 1977 legislative elections, in which the victory of the anti-Francoist political formations meant the opening of a constituent process, led to the drafting of the 1978 Constitution, the approval of the Statute for Autonomy for Catalonia in 1979 and the steady normalisation of democratic electoral consultations in the municipal, autonomous and State spheres. The results of the first municipal elections held in April 1979 served to confirm the people’s wish to break with the dictatorship’s long and murky past.
