Girona commemorates this evening the International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Plenary Hall of the City Council and will feature the interventions of Dr. Marta Marin Dòmine and Dr. Victor Sorensen

The city of Girona will commemorate this afternoon the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The City Council of Girona and the Patronat Call de Girona have planned an institutional event in Plenary Hall of Girona City Council which will be chaired by the mayor of Girona and president of the Patronat Call de Girona, Lluc Salellas Vilar. This is a free proposal and open to everyone, although prior registration is recommended.

"Remembrance the Holocaust is a duty we have as a society because it reminds us the barbarism of which humans are capable. Today, as the world continues to be the scene of crimes and violence, we are once again reclaiming the memory of the Holocaust to help us stop it," Salellas said.

The activity will begin at 7 pm with the presentation and reading of the Resolution 60/70 of the United Nations (UN) of 2005, by the director of the The Museum of Jewish History, Sílvia Planas Marcé. Afterwards, the doctor in Memory Studies and writer Marta Marin Dòmine and the doctor and director of the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage (AEPJ), Víctor Sorensen, will talk. The proposal will close with words from Mayor Lluc Salellas Vilar and the lighting of candles in remembrance and homage to all the victims of the Holocaust and all fascisms.

With this commemoration, Girona reaffirms its commitment to condemn all manifestations of hatred and rejection based on ethnic origin, cultural and gender identities or religious beliefs, which cause intolerance and incite violence against persons or communities. This commitment also implies adherence to the proclamation that urges states and governments to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust and to educate to prevent racism in all its manifestations.

January 27th commemorates every year the the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. The anniversary has become a day of reflection, of memory and of conjuring against oblivion.
