The Langenheim brothers obtain a positive photographic image on a glass plate, which they call the hyalotype, and thus introduce the possibility of projecting photographs with a magic lantern.
John Herschel, the discoverer of fixing agent in 1819, invents the cyanotype, a printed paper made with iron salts. Used from 1880 to 1939.
William Henry Fox Talbot patents the calotype, a negative on paper.
