Girona obtains Sports Tourism Destination certification

31/07/15 | 20 establishments in the city receive the Sports Tourism Destination accreditation plaque promoted by the Catalan Tourism Board.

With the DTE award, the Catalan Government recognises Girona city as a destination offering high-quality resources and services, sports facilities, specialised accommodation and services for both professional sportspersons and tourists wishing to practise sports during their visit.

As a DTE, Girona is now positioned as a tourism destination that meets the requirements of sportspersons looking for a suitable place to train and to improve their physical and technical performance. The DTE seal is also a perfect tool for promoting a wider diversity of tourism options in Catalonia and helping to make tourism less dependent on seasonal factors.

The following hotels have obtained accreditation: AC Palau de Bellavista, Hotel Carlemany, Hotel Ciutat de Girona, Hotel Double Tree by Hilton, Hotel Gran Ultònia, Hotel Ibis Girona Nord, Hotel Llegendes de Girona Catedral, Hotel Melià Girona, Hotel Peninsular and Hotel Ultònia.

Three bike companies have also been accredited: Bike Breaks Girona Cycle Center, Cicloturisme i Medi Ambient, and Bikecat.

Five sports facilities under public, private, or municipal management have been awarded the quality seal: Girona - Fontajau Municipal Sports Pavilion, La Devesa Municipal Sports Area, Palau Sacosta Sports Complex (GEiEG), Sant Ponç Sports Complex (GEiEG), and Girona Tennis Club.

The Girona Tourist Office and the Girona - Gironès County Welcome Point have also received accreditation.

The Sports Tourism Destination (DTE) seal is aimed at promoting and marketing sports-related tourism in Catalonia within a very specific, high-quality segment of the demand: competition athletes, tourists who base their holiday around sports activities, tourists who play sport in their leisure time and visitors who follow major sports events.
In Catalonia today, the DTE seal has been awarded to over 50 sports facilities and companies and 175 tourist establishments offering accommodation for approximately 57,000 persons.
