The students of the University of Girona's MSc in Smart Cities met with their supervisors at the Sabadell City Hall for the first time on February 2nd. The meeting took place in the framework of Sabadell Ciutat Intel·ligent. At the meeting the students set out the 15 practical cases focused on Sabadell they are working. The monthly follow-up meetings that will take place in the coming months were also planned.

The practical cases were suggested by the City Council in accordance with identified needs in the fields of energy efficiency, IT, sustainable urban mobility, culture and waste recovery, among others.

In this respect, the Deputy Mayor and City Councillor in charge of the Sabadell Smart City Programme, pointed out: "the practical cases show that a smart city must be understood in a holistic way since it encompasses most of the municipal services of an integrated city". Ayuso also stated "this bid for a holistic approach to the urban matters has also been made by the University of Girona, which has created a master's degree in smart cities including in its academic curriculum subjects such as energy efficiency, deployment of telecommunication networks and town planning. Indeed, having first degrees and master's degrees with a practical approach and driven by real needs is essential, and that is just what the University of Girona has done with the Master's in Smart Cities.

This meeting takes place in the framework of the collaboration between the City Hall and the Academia, in fulfilment of a common strategy among universities, companies, citizens and public administration. It entails transferring knowledge from the university to the City Council in order to prepare future public-private partnerships the city will benefit from.

On September 18th, the Sabadell City Council, the Girona City Council and the University of Girona signed an agreement by which Sabadell became sister city of the chair Girona Smart City for the 2014 - 2015 term.
