The Easter Week programme of activities in Girona includes musical performances, the traditional Holy Burial procession and the Manaies parade
07/04/17 | The Holy Burial procession is once again the main event during Easter, with the participation of the Manaies.
Girona City Council, the Confraternity Board and the Crucified Christ Association – Manaies de Girona have presented the 2017 Easter Week programme. As every year, the main event will be the now traditional Holy Burial procession, with the Manaies de Girona parade (dressed as ancient Roman legionaries), a spectacle that draws large numbers of visitors to the city.
The events begin on 6 April with the opening address, given by the director of Càritas Diocesana de Girona, Maria Dolors Puigdevall. The Holy Burial procession will take place on Friday 14 April at 9 pm, starting at the Cathedral and returning to the same point at approximately 11 pm. New for this Easter is the addition of a procession by the Verges choir and a group of kettledrummers, who will liven up the event.
There are also other interesting activities planned for Easter Week. On 8 and 9 April, a sacred music concert will be given at 6 pm in the churches of Mercadal and Mare de Déu dels Dolors, respectively. On 8 April, the Fira del Ram market selling decorated Easter palms will be set up in Rambla de la Llibertat. And on Saturday 15, the band La Lira, from Vilafamés, will be organising a public street performance.
Other highlights during the week are the Exposanta 2017 exhibition, which will be on display from 9 to 13 April in the church of Mare de Déu dels Dolors, and an exhibition in the church of Sant Lluc, which will remain open until 14 April in the Castrum of the Manaies.
