Girona launches a campaign to position itself as a sports tourism destination

06/04/16 | A series of actions have been planned, focused on two main areas: local, to attract families and amateur sportspeople, and international, to capture professional sportspeople to act as ambassadors for the Girona Sports Tourism Destination (DTE).

One of the aims of this campaign is to position Girona as a benchmark city for sports tourism, diversify its offer of products and services and de-seasonalise tourism in the city. Some of the actions designed to attract family tourism include DTE member hotels in the city offering special weekend packages for people taking part in DTE 2016 races and sporting events, with a 20% discount on published hotel rates, early breakfast service at 7 am, and late check-out until 3 pm on the day of the sporting event. Additionally, sportspeople and their families staying at DTE hotels can take advantage of a 50% discount at municipal sports facilities.

Girona obtained Sports Tourism Destination certification (DTE) in the multi-sports category (athletics, tennis, swimming, cycling and running) last July. Since then, the city has been working with local agents linked to the sporting world to promote the DTE brand.
