Girona City Council launches a campaign to promote the city as a Sports Tourism Destination

23/10/15 | Girona City Council has presented the first actions of its promotional campaign to publicise the Sports Tourism Destination (DTE) seal obtained by the city last July in the ‘Multi-sport' category (athletics, tennis, swimming, cycling and running).

The Catalan Tourism Agency awards the Sports Tourism Destination (DTE) seal to municipalities in Catalonia that have high-quality specialised infrastructure and services for practicing sports. This model permits sports tourism to be promoted in a more precise and segmented way. There are currently sixteen municipalities in Catalonia certified as Sports Tourism Destinations, five of them in Girona (Banyoles-Pla de l'Estany, Blanes, Castelló d'Empúries-Empuriabrava, Lloret de Mar and Girona).

The city of Girona, thanks to its wide range of tourist products, its sports facilities and natural environment, provides the right conditions to make it an attractive location for organising and holding sporting events. This seal is designed to aid promotion in the international sports market and to attract both amateur and professional sportspeople.

Girona City Council has made two videos showcasing the city's different sports facilities and the running and cycle-tourism routes that form part of #DTEGirona. The recording was made in collaboration with several sportspeople from Girona's clubs.

Councillor for Education and Sport, Isabel Muradàs, will be chairing the DTE Steering Committee, which is made up of municipal experts and representatives of organisations and businesses in the sector, such as the Costa Brava Girona Tourism Board, the Girona Hotel, Tourism and Catering Association, the Greenways Consortium, Fira de Girona, the GEiEG, Girona Tennis Club, Girona Athletics Club, Girona Trail Running Club, TR Running Club, Bikecat, Cicloturisme i Medi Ambient, and Bike Breaks Girona Cycle Centre.

Girona will also join the province's four other DTE-certified cities as a member of the Costa Brava Girona Tourism Board's Nature and Sports Tourism Marketing Club.
