Part of the sixth season of Game of Thrones to be filmed in Girona

08/06/15 | The US television network HBO has confirmed that the sixth season of the acclaimed series will be filmed in Girona and Peñíscola, among other Spanish locations.

The city of Girona will provide a setting for the sixth season of Game of Thrones, one of the current TV shows with the highest viewer numbers in the world. The US television network HBO confirmed the news in an official press release shown on Canal+, which is the TV channel that holds the broadcasting rights to the series in Spain.

Although no details have yet been released about filming in the city —Canal+ has so far only confirmed that the sixth season of the series will also be filmed in other locations, such as Peñíscola—, the event will certainly be an excellent opportunity to raise Girona's international profile, given that Game of Thrones has become a genuine media phenomenon since it was first shown in 2011.

Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by American writer George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones has received critical acclaim and won a Golden Globe and 14 Emmy awards, while its launch on Canal+ broke records for viewer numbers for a fictional series.

It is hoped that the filming, which is due to begin in September, will have an important impact on the city by increasing visitor numbers, such as occurred, for example, in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, which saw a 32 % increase in tourist numbers after the series was filmed there.
