The Museum takes part in Vicens Vives Year
Vicens Vives Year was officially launched on 10th February at the Palau de la Generalitat, seat of the Government of Catalonia. The event celebrates the centenary of the birth of this historian who declared that history liberates and that the new approach to history is and will be the liberation of our spirit.
Jaume Vicens Vives was one of the greatest historians of Catalonia and Spain, and the renovator of Catalan historiography. He proposed a new way of understanding history which emphasised the importance of geographical, demographical, social, economic and cultural factors as key elements for explaining the past. He also promoted a new approach to history which resolutely undertook the study of contemporary times, arguing that the keys to understanding the present are to be found in the immediate past.
The exhibition entitled Jaume Vicens Vives and the new approach to history will be shown in the City History Museum from 10 April to 30 May 2010.
