Santiago Sobrequés had deep roots in his native city of Girona, where he was much loved for many different reasons. He had taught many generations of students in Girona Secondary School; the citizens of Girona had learned about the history of their city through his research work; and he had encouraged and directed many cultural, sporting and community associations. He was the most highly qualified representative of the new Escola Històrica de Girona (Girona Historical School) together with Jaume Vicens Vives, Lluís Batlle Prats, Joaquim Pla Cargol, Pelai Negre Pastell, Miquel Oliva Prat and Jaume Marquès Casanovas. This group of intellectuals was associated with the Institut d'Estudis Gironins (Institute of Girona Studies), founded and promoted by Sobrequés, who was also a member of its Board of Directors.
