This room displays a part of the collection of guillotines, printers and machines for mechanical and electronic composition that illustrate technological renovations in the printing trade in the city over the years.
Girona was one of the first cities in Spain to use electric street lighting. In this room we can see its first electrical transformers, dynamos and alternators and appreciate the importance of its industrial fabric.
Within the industrialisation process in Catalonia as a whole in the second half of the 19th century, Girona played a significant and pioneering role, favouring the introduction of technological innovations such as electricity, the telegraph and telephone, the radio and continuous paper, among others.
It is not easy to establish a precise origin for the sardana. The circle dance is perhaps the most spontaneous and generalised of all choreographic arrangements, being documented from ancient times in the most diverse and distant cultures. It was not until the mid-16th century that the word sardana appeared in a document, and it was only some 150 years ago that it was configured as the dance we know today. Throughout these years, the manner of performing it has evolved, and a succession of authors, scholars and musicians have contributed to the consolidation of a dance which now identifies the Catalan people.
