Entre la mar y la arena

Concert by Liliana Benveniste

Friday, June 17,
Call de Girona

Sephardic music is an important part of the legacy left by the descendants of those Jews who were expelled from Spain by the Catholic Kings in 1492 and formed new communities in the former Ottoman Empire, around the Mediterranean Sea.

These Sephardic Jews maintained their customs forging a culture in which the Ladino language (which has its roots in the old Castilian who spoke before the expulsion), was enriched by the languages of the places where they settled, such as Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian, or French, and also of their sacred language, Hebrew.

The Sephardic repertoire includes love songs, story telling, humorous and picaresque themes and also paraliturgical field with praise and thanks to the Lord.

The group is formed by Liliana Benveniste (voice), Jesus Esteban Parra (ropes), Begoña Larrañaga (piano and accordion) and Ivan Mellen (percussion).

Liliana Benveniste, Buenos Aires (Argentina) is a singer and composer. She studied singing at the Buchardo National Conservatory.

She has been working for years in the research, recreation and dissemination of Sephardic culture. She learned the language, customs and songs according to the tradition of this rich cultural heritage.
