Hanukkah festival

Commemorative celebration

Sunday, December 13,
Call de Girona

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is celebrated every year on the 25th of the month of Kislev in the Jewish calendar and commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Greek occupation (2nd century BC) and the subsequent purification and renewal of the Temple. The tradition is to light an eight arm candelabra, called Hanukkah, gradually for eight days, every evening with a candle. This year the festival begins on the night of December 6th.

This last year we revived the celebration, and since it was well received by the public it has encouraged us to plan it again. On December 13th, everybody is invited to participate in the public lighting of the Hanukkah candles.

The event will start at 8 pm in the Plaça del Vi and will consist of a presentation of the festival and its importance within the Jewish tradition. Then, the authorities and other groups will carry out the lighting of the candles, finally, there will be performance by Ancient Groove, and a sufganiyot tasting, a traditional sweet cake, will be offered.

The event is organized by the Patronat Call de Girona in collaboration with the City Council, the Girona bishopric, the Muslim community, students of 2nd ESO Jaume Vicens Vives and Carles Rahola Institutes, the group of Hebrew students of Nahmanides Institute for Jewish Studies of Girona, and the Jewish cultural platform Mozaika (Barcelona).
