Hanukkah festival

Commemorative celebration

Tuesday, December 23,
Call de Girona

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is celebrated every year on the 25th of the month of Kislev in the Jewish calendar and commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Greek occupation (2nd century BC) and the subsequent purification and renewal of the Temple. The tradition is to light an eight arm candelabra, called Hanukkah, gradually for eight days, every evening with a candle. This year the festival begins on the eve of December 17th.

In 1998 the Patronat Call de Girona organized the first celebration commemorating this event, which brought together over 1.000 people, after 500 years without any Jewish celebration in the city. On that occasion, a large candelabra of Hanukkah was lighted in Torre Gironella, a refuge of the Jewish community in an extremely difficult time for them in the medieval city.

This last year we revived the celebration, and since it was well received by the public it has encouraged us to plan it again. On December 23rd, everybody is invited to participate in the public lighting of the Hanukkah candles.

The event will start at 8 pm in the Plaça del Vi and will consist of a presentation of the festival and its importance within the Jewish tradition. Then, the authorities and other groups will carry out the lighting of the candles, finally, there will be a klezmer music recital, and a sufganiyot tasting, a traditional sweet cake, will be offered.

Organisation: Patronat Call de Girona and the Plataforma Mozaika de Barcelona.
